Hawaiian Quilt made from a bundle of precut fabric squares.
The size is 74" X 82"

The blocks in this bundle were all from the same pattern, just picking up different parts of the hawaiian scene. The colors are mostly blue and some red/orange.

I still have quite a few blocks left of this pattern, but these were cut in smaller sizes. They all have to be trimed to correct size. I have enough for another quilt.
These bundles cost from $4.00 to about $8.00--- Not bad at all for all the fun you can have!!!!!

smallest size-6" X 61/4"

size-31/2" X 3 3/4" -- maybe 6-8 same color same pattern

size-6 3/4"X 8"--Navy,black and red, then another pattern thrown in---

How the bundles look when you buy them.

5 1/4" X 5"

strips 2 3/4" X 13"
quite a few in a bundle

It's fun--- If you get to Hawaii look for the bundles at Fabric Mart
Here I have found the bundles usually in a cardoard box in a corner---seems to be more sometime than others--- If you don't see them ask.---
or the weekly Swap Meet held at Aloha Stadium

At the swap meet just keep looking on the tables of the various venders--- there will be some here some there---It's a "hunt" !!!!!!!

I know I have been lax in keeping up my Blog. hopefully I will get back into the swing of things and Explore with you Textile Art----

My Scallop Quilt!
I had an idea for different colored rows of fabric cut in scallops.
I made a few quick sketches and then moved to Electric Quilt 6 to design it. I would have much rather used CorelDraw to do the job. I have used it for so long I can design things much faster in it. I find EQ6 not real user friendly, however the nice part about EQ6 is that it will give you all the fabric required and you can
easily adjust the quilt and border sizes as everything is done with a quilt in mind
I had bought the Polka Dot fabric a few years ago while visiting my sister in Charlotte, NC.
She took me to Mary Jo's. http://maryjos.com/
and that was all I needed to make it a must stop place when ever we are traveling south.
When the scallop idea came to me I thought the polka dot fabric would be perfect. I don't know why, but I also wanted to use rick rack.......Gosh I haven't used or thought of rick rack in probably 20+ years----

Isn't it funny how these ideas just pop into your head. I've been rereading Julia Cameron's book " The Artists Way" and she talks about how you can't just think ideas "up". You have to dig "down" into your well--deep inside you where all your creative ideas are flowing. And so my creative well gave birth to a scallop designed quilt with bright polka dot fabric and rick rack embellishments!!!

I wanted to take the polka dot fabric even further and looked around locally at quilt shops and on the Internet for white on white polka dot fabric. Plain white would just be to boring with all those dots!! I couldn't find any, but on a trip to Joanne's there is was----white on white polka dot fabric--- wow was I happy!!!!

So design, fabric and embellishments were all decided----now cut the fabric! Cutting the fabric from my paper templates seemed "old fashion" to me---
I have to use a rotary cutter or I'm not happy.

Well.............I could make my own plastic template..............How...............
I went to Home Depot and bought a piece of Plexiglass for under $4.00. The salesman said to cut it slowly because it wants to melt back together because of the heat the saw blade generates !!!! ok....I can do this...

So after having marked the patterns with permanent marker onto the piece of plexiglass I used my scroll saw and did a few practice cuts along the edge to just get a feel for it. Well 3 times I cut the same line and 3 times it melted behind where I had just cut......I did a search online for cutting plexiglass and found that you have to do something to cool the blade as it is cutting. Masking tape was mentioned, blowing air on the blade from a compressor, WD-40 or detergent.

I put masking tape on the underside of the cutting lines and then I thought maybe putting the plexiglass on 2 layers of cardboard would help...........sure enough-- it cut beautifully.

I was now able to use my rotary cutter and 2 new templates to cut both the colored and white fabric.

I now have all the blocks sewn together and the blocks sewn into strips.
I have them up on the design wall and am now deciding if I like the color placement of the strips. While the are still in strips I want to sew the rick rack to the scallops. After the strips are sewn together I think I'm going to sew another strip of rick rack down the back of the scallop.
That is my progress so far.
Happy Quilting!!
Take care,
Judy

Here we had a real treat...........................
One of the teachers was there and agreed to show us her beautiful quilts............................

Carol Kamaile with her quilt.........................
Traditional Hawaiian Quilts sewn by HAND!!!!!!!!!!.....................
I'm so impressed. .......This is wonderful

Did you notice all the tiny rows of stitching around the design???... WOW...

This is one of Carols that was displayed there.

Carol had her Hawaiian quilt patterns available at a very reasonable price.

I bought 2 pillow patterns--Anthuriums and Monstera. She has a wonderful selection, but not being that good at hand sewing, I thought it best to start with a smaller project.
There were many women at the shop and they were just setting up for a class. What fun-
I will definitely stop in again next vacation. In fact, I would like to take a class with Carol. That's something I will try to line up ahead of time, so I know the dates and times of the classes.
I guess this is a good thing to consider when going on vacation--- look up local quilt shops and see if any classes are available. How much fun would that be???????
.................................................................................................................................................................... Here is an example of what I was talking about in the last post.
Make a large print quilt, as I did with the Hawaiian Bamboo one, but add a different twist to it.
Do you have another idea? Love to hear from you!!!
Happy quilting!
Hawaiian Quilt is Finished!!!

Before I get to the next quilt shop I visited while on vacation, I wanted to show you my finished quilt.
The front..........................

The back...............................
It was so easy to make...............and fun............... My kind of quilt. I especially like the way the design shows off the beautiful large scale print.

While working on it I was coming up with ideas for another quilt using the same idea.

After the front and back are finished, lay them right side up, on top of each other, on the cutting table. Then cut at a slight angle, across the width of the quilt, somewhere in the middle, and sew the two opposite pieces together.

I will try to come up with an example in CorelDraw to show you what I mean.

Another Hawaiian Quilt Shop in next post!!!!!

Thanks for visiting my blog

Aloha-
More from Kaimuki Dry Goods...................
This first fabric my daughter really liked. We decided to get it for her quilt.
We will use my "new favorite" quilt pattern- like the one in the Nov. 18 posting- (I have recently made another of those and will post the pictures another time.) I have to come up with a name for the pattern--- I'm thinking "Crazy Squares"

It's such a fun and fast quilt to make, and it uses large print fabric. There are so many beautiful fabrics out there and these Hawaiian designs will really work well for this quilt...........................

For the next fabric........................................ I have a new pattern design in mind. I had seen one similar in a quilt book. It uses just 2 pieces of fabric. In the book it has one large print and the other tiny patterned design.
Half of the quilt is one large piece of fabric and the other half of the quilt is the other piece of fabric. Then reversed on the back............................... another fun and fast design..................
Before we left I had seen these fabrics on their web site...........................

I thought I could change the look by using these fabrics with different color backgrounds.......................
Well when we got in the store and I was so in love with everything it was hard to decide what to do. Finally I came to my senses and went with my original idea. Now that we are home I'm anxious to get started. ----
Another Hawaiian Quilt Shop in the next posting!!!!!

Next post I will show you what I did purchase...............................

Aloha---

Over the next few postings I would like to show you some quilt shops and fabrics I found on vacation.

Today's shop is -- Kaimuki Dry Goods--- http://www.kaimukidrygoods.com/default.asp
Wow--

The fabric selection was wonderful. They were kind enough to let me take photos to share with you.

It was all a little mind boggling. I had an idea of the fabric that I was interested in from first looking at their web site at home, but seeing all this wonderful fabric- I was being pulled this way and that.

I took pictures, then went back a few days later after I had time to think about it, to make my purchases..... However........ The above fabric, that I loved, was gone :( !!!!!!! when I went back. I should have known, there was only a yard or two on the bolt....

One of the wonderful things about their selection was that I felt much of the fabric had an Hawaiian “feel” to it, but could easily look good back here in New York. As the fabrics on the right above.
That has always been the problem I have found with many of the stores that sell fabric in Hawaii--- Most is used for Hawaiian clothing, and although it is beautiful, I feel it just doesn't seem to “go” once you bring it home. As the above left hand fabric.
And then...... maybe that is something I should work on......coming up with designs/patterns that would "work" here......hummmmmmm...something to ponder. All the fabric is just so beautiful!!!!

The fabric below I thought was wonderful. My picture doesn't do it justice. The background is a pretty chocolate color and the leaves and flowers are pale turquoises.
The fabric this store carries were a lot of the names we are familiar with--- Hoffman-Moda-TrendTex, etc.

More from Kaimuki Dry Goods in the next posting. The web site seems to be having trouble uploading images. I feel fortunate that I was able to get this many posted

I hope you have enjoyed the photos.
